How to make shrimp the Egyptian way

Egyptian-style shrimp (Gambri) is a delicious dish, usually cooked with garlic, coriander and spices, and served with rice or in tomato sauce. It’s a simple yet delicious recipe that highlights the natural sweetness of shrimp while adding a touch of flavor. Here’s how to prepare it:


Egyptian style shrimp ingredients:

  • 500g (1lb) medium or large shrimp, peeled and cleaned
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or vegetable oil
  • 5 cloves of minced garlic
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 large tomato, chopped
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • ½ tsp paprika (optional for color)
  • ½ tsp ground turmeric (optional for extra flavor)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste (optional)
  • 1 cup water or vegetable broth

Egyptian Shrimp Instructions:

1. Sauté the Aromatics:

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the onion and sauté for 2-3 minutes until it becomes soft and translucent.
  • Add the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.

Add tomatoes and spices:

  • Stir in the chopped tomato and cook for 4-5 minutes until it softens and releases its juices.
  • Add the cumin, coriander, paprika, turmeric, salt, and pepper, and stir well.

3. Cook the Shrimp:

  • Add the shrimp to the pan and stir to coat in the tomato-spice mixture.
  • Cook for about 4-5 minutes, turning the shrimp until they turn pink and opaque.

4. Add Broth & Simmer:

  • Pour in the water or vegetable broth and let the sauce simmer for another 5-7 minutes until slightly thickened.
  • Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning as needed.

5. Garnish and Serve:

  • Garnish the shrimp with chopped fresh cilantro.
  • Serve the shrimp with Egyptian rice, bread, or even fried potatoes on the side.

  • Serve with a refreshing Egyptian salad (Salata Baladi) on the side.
